Five Years To Act  - Visuals from Climate Lecture at UChicago.

Professor James G. Anderson said 5 years to act and  recently the IPCC issued a report saying 10, yet the Provost at the University of Chicago said nothing.

Few people seem to know of the warning. The University provides no information about the content of Anderson's lecture which might be the usual practice yet given his message and  the increasing climate extremes it does confirm Professor Anderson's criticism of it and other universities for failing  society and their students. These visuals, though made available by the Office of the Provost, are only available if one knows to ask. The author of the Forbes article informed me they existed.

Professor James Anderson, Harvard atmospheric chemist, delivered the Benton Lecture at the University of Chicago in January of 2018, following award of the Benton Prize in 2017 for his contributions to science and public service. It was his identification of the chemical dynamics of CFC molecules in the stratosphere that explained how the ozone layer was being destroyed, placing terrestrial life at risk.

An article in Forbes on-line is the only record of the contents of his presentation. Extreme warming of the planet is already locked in to our future due to existing CO2 levels. 75 - 80% of the permanent arctic ice has been lost  in the past 30 years. At the current melt rate and due to unusually warm ocean water making its way into the arctic, the remaining multi year ice will be gone by 2022. That ice absorbs much of the energy that would other wise warm the water during the Arctic summer which would accelerate the liberation of methane from sea floor sediments; estimated as a sudden 50 giga ton release. Massive release of methane would heat the arctic atmosphere and disrupt the overturning structure that is responsible for the jet stream as well as put massive amounts of water vapor into the stratosphere.

Humans would not recover and the habitability of the planet would be greatly altered. That is however of no consequence to the capitalist class who dominate the  financial, military, educational and political centers of power  through  organizations like the Council on Foreign Relations, The Brookings Institution and Universities like Harvard, Yale and Chicago. There is in the moment profit to be made and power to be consolidated.  In their delusional assessment of themselves as superior beings they expect to survive the mass extinction they are driven to impose on the Earth.

The concentration of carbon dioxide (CO₂) in the atmosphere just broke two records. CO₂ was 421.46 in the week starting May 22, 2022, at Mauna Loa, Hawaii, while CO₂ was 420.99 ppm in May 2022.
